Karhandla Gate

The most renowned entry point into the UPKWS — prime tiger territory and the beating heart of the sanctuary's wildlife.

About Karhandla Gate

The Karhandla Gate is the most popular and frequently visited entry point of the Umred-Pauni-Karhandla Wildlife Sanctuary. It sits on the eastern fringe of Nagpur district and opens into the densest and most wildlife-rich section of the sanctuary — home to some of the most celebrated tigers of central India.

The gate takes its name from the Karhandla village nearby and has long been a favourite among wildlife photographers and nature enthusiasts. The jeep trails here wind through a mosaic of teak forests, grassland patches, and seasonal water bodies, providing ideal conditions for animal sightings throughout the year.

The legendary tigress Jai and her offspring have been repeatedly documented in this zone, making it a hotspot for tiger tourism in Maharashtra. Guides at Karhandla Gate are experienced and knowledgeable, significantly improving your chances of a close and memorable encounter.

Safari Experience

Safaris operate in open gypsies (4WD jeeps) accommodating up to 6 guests plus a trained naturalist guide. The trail covers approximately 20–25 km within the core zone, taking you through varied terrain — from bamboo thickets to open clearings where predators often rest during cooler hours.

Both morning and evening safaris are available, each offering distinct advantages. Morning safaris reveal the forest waking up — with birds calling, tigers returning from night hunts, and mist rising from waterholes. Evening safaris capture the golden hour glow and increased animal activity as temperatures drop.

Best Season to Visit

October to June is the prime safari season at Karhandla Gate. November through February offers pleasant weather and excellent visibility through the dry deciduous forests. March to May, though hot, brings the most dramatic wildlife action as animals congregate around shrinking water sources — and tiger sightings peak dramatically during this period.

The sanctuary closes during the monsoon (July–September) for forest regeneration, though this period transforms the landscape into a lush emerald canvas.

Getting to Karhandla Gate

Karhandla Gate is located approximately 50 km from Nagpur city centre. The most convenient route is via the Nagpur–Umred highway, then a right turn at Umred towards the sanctuary. Auto-rickshaws, taxis, and private vehicles are all viable options. The gate itself has a small parking area and a forest department reception desk where permits are checked.

Before You Visit

Wear Muted Colours

Avoid bright or white clothing. Earthy greens, browns, and khaki help you blend into the environment.

Arrive Early

Report at the gate 30 minutes before safari time. Latecomers may forfeit their booking without refund.

Stay Silent

Noise disturbs wildlife. Speak softly and follow the naturalist guide's instructions at all times.

No Flash Photography

Flash can startle and stress animals. Use a zoom lens with a high ISO setting in low-light conditions.

Carry Water

Bring sufficient drinking water, especially for morning safaris. No food or plastic bags allowed inside.

Book in Advance

Safari slots fill up quickly, especially Oct–May. Always pre-book to avoid disappointment.
